Can a guilty conscience keep wounds from healing?

The memories that consume and torment Candace are starting to destroy her when she meets Ryan Campbell, a successful bar owner. He feels instantly connected and tries to show her that hope is worth fighting for. But is Ryan harboring his own demons? At what point do secrets become lies?

My Thoughts:

I don’t even know what to say about this book other than, it is AMAZING. Fading is an intense, emotional, heartbreaking and beautiful piece of art that left me wanting more even after reading it. This book had me in blubbering tears multiple times.

We start off with Candace, a dance major, who grew up in a household where she was thought that image is everything. Her parents don’t agree with her choices but she decides to pursue her dreams and become a ballerina anyway. Candace needs things to be a certain way and organized, she needs to have order and control. About to graduate, Candace decides to relax a little and have some fun. After going out a few times with a guy (her parents choice for her), Candace is brutally attacked.

I have never read a book like this before. It is utter perfection. After reading the prologue, I knew the attack was coming but it didn’t take away anything from when it actually happened. I was still left feeling devastated. When Candace is in the hospital and the nurse tells Jase what happened, I was a blubbering mess because I felt all of that pain.
The author, E.K. Blair did an excellent job portraying different emotions throughout her writing. She has this way of making you feel every torment or emotion Candace went through. Ms. Blair did a great job writing about such a taboo subject without compromising the ugliness of the situation. Sometimes I would think, if I were in the same situation, would I shutdown emotionally? Would I blame myself? Would I be scared of doing everything and anything? I found my answer to be yes on all three questions. This is one way I know the author did an amazing job.

I really like the character growth, little by little, in Candace throughout the book. It shows how strong she is. I absolutely loved the other characters: Ryan, Jase and Mark. They were an AMAZING support system. Ryan is by far my favourite character in the book. He pushed himself to the top of my favourite book boys list. He is patient, kind, understanding, supportive, loving, protective and possessive; everything I love in a book boy. The thing that stood out for me about him was the small things he would do to help Candace overcome her fears and grow stronger. He made her come out of her comfort zone like going out in big crowds and surfing.

Fading is a beautiful story that shows you even through complete darkness, love is extremely powerful. I am so happy I was given the opportunity to read this book for review. Make sure you have a box of tissues nearby because you will definitely need it.

Blog Tour and Interview: Alyx Rayer Chronicles by S.J. Pierce

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for the Alyx Rayer Chronicles Series. The author gave a great interview to share. Enjoy!

Marked for Vengeance by S.J. Pierce
Series: Alyx Rayer Chronicles #1
Publication date: October 10th 2012
Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance

Synopsis:

Alyx Rayer’s existence in Atlanta, the eternally bustling capital of Georgia, is one of routine and blending in among the worker bees. But her ‘normal’ life is actually a façade for a higher calling; she's a three hundred year old soul, encased in a human vessel and sent from the darkness between heaven and Earth to capture her Marked when summoned by her superiors.

During the initial, routine stake-out of her Marked, a dream prophet named Isaac Walsh, Alyx is thrown for an emotional loop when his allure captivates her heart from two rooftops away. The event marks the very instance when her sense of what’s right and what’s wrong is brutally challenged as her contact with him is strictly forbidden.

While already trapped between honor and desire, her emotional struggles are further challenged by a man in a black suit who continually pops up when she least expects it, his presence evoking a strange response from the scar she was branded with at birth. The scar tingles like a warning beacon, alerting her that something is amiss. Because her superiors never told her what this would mean, or much of anything except what to do when they summon, she can only conclude to try and keep her sanity, and her life, from completely shattering to pieces.

This engaging first book of the series is a Paranormal Romance novel interlaced with twists, turns, and thrilling suspense that is sure to satisfy readers of any genre.

1. What inspired you to write the series?

I’ve always had a fascination with angels and demons, which coincidentally, happen to be big right now in the Paranormal Romance genre. I’m also a sucker for Fantasy; my first introduction into this genre was with The Chronicles of Narnia as a child. So the series is a good blending of both – paranormal and fantasy, my two loves.

2. What were your favorite elements of the story to write?

I can’t say all of it, can I? lol If I was forced at gun point to choose, I’d say the characters because they move the story along. They need to be multi-faceted, interesting, and surprise you from time to time. In real life we all have our weaknesses and skeletons. We might be inherently good, but struggle with temptation and our darker sides. In my opinion, a hero/ heroine who always makes the right decisions and knows all the right answers and never does anything wrong is unrealistic and boring, so it’s no surprise that I put a lot of effort into constructing my characters and love every minute of it.

3. Were there parts of the story you didn't enjoy writing?

I can honestly say no to this one, even at gunpoint. :) I enjoy writing so much that even the heavier subjects are enjoyable for me. Not that I like putting my characters through tough situations, but I recognize every element of a story is necessary. I will admit, though, that I do cry sometimes as I’m writing certain scenes.

4. Do any of the characters personalities resemble your own, or people you know?
In a way, I think a piece of me is in every character. A favorite quote of mine is by Ernest Hemingway, who I love:

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”

It’s so true. I pour everything I have into my writing, so it only stands to reason that – even if it’s a small percentage – at least part of every character is a reflection of me.

5. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

GREAT question! During promotional blasts and blog tours, it’s easier to only focus on all of the good things that have been said about your book. After all, we’re all trying to create a brand and make a sale. But hidden behind all of those gushing, enthusiastic reviews lurk the *gasp* negative ones! I’d say the toughest for me to swallow was one of my very first. He said my dialogue was stilted and I used too many descriptions, and I’ll tell you, NO amount of coaching will truly prepare you for your first blow. I knew it would eventually come, but it didn’t ease the sting. I just did what I thought was best – take what he had to say into consideration and use it to better my work.

Now… on to the fun part! :) One of my most memorable compliments came from a woman who reads and reviews a lot of indie novels. She emailed me to tell me that my Alyx Rayer series was so refreshingly different than everything else that was out there, it made her want to delete everything she had on her Kindle. Talk about a monumental compliment! And it couldn’t have come at a better time – right on the heels of my first negative review. I burst into tears. My fans really are my angels… God seems to send them when I need their encouragement the most.

6. Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
Thank you for giving a debut author a shot! Your support has been the fuel that keeps me going on days when doubt and exhaustion want to win the battle. You rock!!!

As a matter of fact, her first publishing credit was a poem she wrote at the age of twelve. My Thoughts:

Good Vibrations is a fun summer read. We start off with Mallory going to Hawaii to visit her best friend Sunny. As soon as she lands in Hawaii, she sees this hot guy, Evan. He hits on Mallory and gives her car ride since Sunny isn’t able to make it to pick her up.
When Mallory first meets Evan, she is smitten with him. They have an instant attraction to each other. Evan is a bad boy, player and has one week girlfriends while they are on vacation. When Evan meets Mallory, it knocks him out of his element. He can’t stop thinking about her; he is a little bit obsessed. Mallory sees through Evan’s bull****. She sees who he really is deep down when he is not hiding behind arrogance and selfishness. Evan also sees through Mallory’s façade as well.

This story was entertaining. There were some funny parts in the book. In the first 7%, I found myself laughing out loud. Close to the end of the book, a part of the book with Kate, Murphy, Evan and Mallory, I found myself dying of laughter. I could not stop laughing for 5 minutes straight. It was great. I really liked how the author was able to add some comedy to this story.

When Evan and Mallory finally connect, they are very cute together and sweet. Evan is such a different person when he cares about someone. He puts Mallory’s needs first, and then takes care of himself. The whole book kind of reminds me of Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire. I saw a lot of similarities between Evan and Travis and Mallory and Abby. With Evan and Travis, they were possessive and protective over their women; with Mallory and Abby they would forgive almost anything the men did because they had such strong feelings for them. I think this was one of the reasons why I liked this story.

Good Vibrations is a great read while you are at the beach and have a few hours to spare. We still have to find out a lot of information about Evan and his family. I feel like we just hit the surface. There is something major going on with Evan. He has secrets that we still need to know. Adding this kind of character development to Evan would enhance the book and make it great. I am hoping everything will be explained in the second book. I am looking forward to it to seeing all the drama that unfolds. From the sneak peek at the end of the book, it will definitely be entertaining.

Blog Tour: The Do Over by A.L. Zaun

Title: The Do Over
Author: A.L. Zaun
Release date: May 20th, 2013
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Tour organized by: AToMR Tours

Book Description

Life doesn't look like it's supposed to for Daniela, aka Dani. After a painful break-up with Rick, Dani decides she doesn't want to deal with the hassles of relationship.

After almost two years, Dani's friends stage an intervention, forcing her out of her holding pattern and back into the real world of dating.

Liam, a down to earth firefighter, may be just the person to show her she’s still worth something. Their chemistry is instant and electric. But will Dani be able to trust her patched-up heart with him?

And what will happen when Rick decides he’ll go to any lengths to get her back?

About the Author
A.L  Zaun graduated from Florida International University with a degree in English Literature a long time ago. A degree she didn’t use at all in her professional endeavors. She loves to read, write and take pictures. She walks around with her camera, and most importantly she has her e-reader available at all times. Healthcare Management by day, Mommy in the evening and most nights, you can find her sitting in front of her laptop with a bottle of Diet Pepsi, bringing the voices in her head to life on the pages of her debut novel, The Do Over.

My Thoughts:

Dani is a hopeless romantic. She dates Rick; a man she thinks has so much potential to be a great person. After a year of dating, Rick breaks up with her giving no real reason why he wants to. Dani retreats into the world of her kindle and books to help her cope with the loss. Two years have passed by and Rick sees Dani again and decides he must have her by any means necessary.

Dani is very relatable. She is a kindle lover with book boyfriends, and I am just like her although not as intense. My heart broke the way Rick broke up with her; the worst thing, he didn’t even care enough to stop watching the television to do it. When Dani meets Liam, it is like a scene out of a book. It was so hot and what he says to her, “I’m a jealous fool and I don’t share. Mind putting it away?” This was one of my favourite lines in the whole book. Their meeting was electric and I desperately wanted to see what was going to happen.

The story is told in multiple points of views: Dani, Liam and Rick. For me, Liam carried the whole book. I found his POV to be interesting but at times a little too sappy. At the same time, after everything that happened with Dani’s past relationships he was perfect for her. She needed a night and shining armour to save her and change her perception of men. Liam showed her what a true gentleman was. He always put her and her needs first and stayed at a pace she was comfortable with. He showed her the difference between pricks (her previous boyfriends) and a good and decent guy.

One person I did not care for was Rick. He manipulated everyone so that he could get what he wanted. He was an ass and only cared for himself until Madison started showed him the errors of his ways. Even though, I didn’t like him, I found Rick’s POV to be mildly entertaining.

This was a good read. I would definitely recommend this book to people who have had their hearts broken by pricks. It shows them that there are still good men out there, they just need to be found. I thought the ending of the story was kind of predictable. From about half way through I sort of knew what was going to happen but I still enjoyed it.

Blog Tour: Off Limits by Sawyer Bennett

Welcome to my stop on the Off Limits Blog Tour! Below you will find an awesome giveaway and my review of the book.

Title: Off Limits
Author: Sawyer Bennett
Release date: April 16, 2013
Publisher: Big Dog Books, LLC
Age Group: New Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Tour organized by: AToMR Tours

Book Description:

“There is a vulnerability there, hovering just below the surface. And I want to pick at it until I expose it. Then I want to kiss it."

Two years ago, Emily Burnham, had an epiphany about the shallowness of her life. And she made it her mission to become a different person…a better woman. Out from under the controlling thumb of her mother, Emily is tasting the real world for the first time. And she likes it.

Nixon Caldwell has served his time in the Marine Corps, surviving two brutal tours in Afghanistan. He is back home, surrounded by what he likes best…isolation. It's certainly the easiest way to avoid confrontation of the consuming guilt that is weighing him down.

When an accident brings Emily and Nix together, he soon learns he is not the master of his own fate. Struggling with his own pain, Nix tries to guard himself against Emily’s charms. He wants her in his bed, but he doesn’t want her in his heart.

Having grabbed life by the horns, Emily wants it all. But is she willing to accept just the small part of himself that Nix is offering? Can she reach the part of his soul that he has deemed to be Off Limits?

This book is the follow up novel to Off Sides by Sawyer Bennett. It can be read as a stand-alone.

Where to find/Buy the book:

About the Author:
Sawyer Bennett is the pen name for a snarky southern woman and reformed trial lawyer who decided to finally start putting on paper all of the stories that were floating in her head. She is married to a mobster (well, a market researcher) and they have two big, furry dogs who hog the bed. Sawyer would like to report she doesn't have many weaknesses but can be bribed with a nominal amount of milk chocolate.

My Thoughts:
Sawyer Bennett had an epiphany 2 years ago; she doesn't want to be the same snotty person she was before. She vowed to become a different person, her own person controlling her own life. When Emily & Nix first meet, it is by accident. One thing I loved about Emily, she is not afraid to speak her mind and tell someone off. She is independent, witty and smart and you can see from the first meeting that Nix had a soft spot for her.

Nix. What can I say about him? He is HOT, bad ass and definitely an alpha male. For me, Nix made the story. It is heartbreaking the trauma he went through while serving in Afghanistan. I loved his character development. He did a total 180 by the end of the book. At first, he was closed off and mean to everyone (which is a nice way of saying it) except his father and brother. Emily manages to get under his skin little by little as time passes; she understood him because of her own experiences and knew when to push and ask questions and when to just to leave it alone. I think that is one of the main reasons why he let Emily in and started caring for her emotionally, she is very different from other women.

I loved all of the characters. They were really likable. They were all strong and charismatic in their own way. One thing I thought was off was in the beginning of the story, Emily’s mother was so focused on what can be done to help get The Presidency, and by the end of the book her attitude changed 100%. I found the change in her behaviour was sudden and did not feel real to me. I would have liked to see her appear more in Emily’s life after Emily admitted what her ex-boyfriend did to her so we could see how the changes. Other than that, I found the story to be really enjoyable.

I did not read Off Sides before reading this novel, but I found I really liked Danny and Ryan and I may have to buy it and read it. Off Limits is a testament to how relationships, whether they are physical/love or best friends can change a person for the better.

My Rating:

4 out of 5 stars

Six Words for Comes the Night:

Escape – The need is there for all three girls, and so is the dark means.

Survival – Survival is an issue for the girls, each of whom must overcome the torments of their respective pasts, but it is also a literal challenge for our ‘casters’ as the hunters seek to destroy them.

Revenge – With inhibition set aside when our girls cast out, revenge is giddily and guiltlessly unleashed.

Loyalty – While the girls have little in common but for their pain, they develop a deep friendship and fierce loyalty as they claim the night together.

Power – Even as they shed their bodies, which are left behind and helpless, they’re positively flooded with power in their dark caster forms. Slowly, this empowerment begins to infuse the girls’ entire existence.

Hunters – Fearful, vehement and deadly, hunters seek to destroy that which they don’t understand and cannot control.
